Last checked: August 27, 2026. This guide covers rod fishing, Diving, Fish Bait, Fish Trap, Mines fish, and the Museum Fish Wing. Match the water, season, weather, shadow size, and rarity; donate first Museum targets before selling. Older pre-v0.15 guides may omit Fish Bait, Terrariums, Fish Trap, Ancient Ruins fish, and later Museum sets.
Fishing basics
You can cast into essentially any fishable water, including the Mines. The town fountain cannot be fished. Hold the Charged Tool action to set the target and distance; a red X means the selected tile cannot be fished. Casting itself does not consume Stamina, but a successful catch does.
Fish appear as dark shadows. Casting near a shadow helps it notice the bobber. A fish may nibble before biting; wait for the ! above the bobber before reeling. Reeling before the actual bite can scare it away.
There are four normal shadow sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Giant. Shadow size narrows the target after location, season, and weather are matched, but size alone does not guarantee rarity.
A Fish School contains roughly 2-5 fish before disappearing. School Crasher, Full Class I, and Frenzy can alter school behavior; a school does not guarantee a particular rarity.
Fishing locations
- Ponds: Mistria west of The Manor at the north of town; The Eastern Road; The Deep Woods.
- Rivers: the Player's Farm; Mistria; The Eastern Road; The Narrows.
- Ocean: The Western Ruins (not diveable), Sweetwater Farm (not diveable), and The Beach.
- Upper Mines: floors 2-19.
- Tide Caverns: floors 21-39.
- Deep Earth: floors 41-59.
- Lava Caves: floors 61-79.
- Ancient Ruins: floors 81-89 and 91-99.
The Ancient Ruins range is precise for fishing; do not imply every floor necessarily contains fishable water. The Coelacanth guide covers its Ancient Ruins lookup separately.
Weather and fishing
The current weather distinctions matter for particular fish:
- Calm: Sunny.
- Special: Breezy / Wind, including Spring and Fall seasonal wind.
- Inclement: Rainy / Rain, Snow.
- Heavy Inclement: Storm / Thunderstorm, Blizzard.
Many seasonal fish are Any Weather, but the Museum reference below preserves exact combinations where the data calls out Rain, Rainy, Storm, Thunderstorm, Snow, Blizzard, or seasonal Wind. Do not collapse all rain-related entries into one generic “rain” condition.

- Lightning Fish: River, Summer, Storm / Thunderstorm, Medium.
- Leaf Fish: River, Fall, Fall Wind / breezy falling-leaf weather, Small.
- Snow Fish: Ocean, Winter, Blizzard, Medium.
Only one of each Legendary Fish variety can be caught per save. Donate the first copy to the Museum; do not farm it, sell it because of its value, or assume Lucky Haul can duplicate it. v0.12.0 prevented multiple copies, v0.14.2 closed Lucky Haul / School Crasher duplication paths, and v0.15.2 removed Legendary Fish from Fish Trap results. Rare Fish Bait does not replace the Legendary perk or bypass the season/weather conditions. See the Legendary Fish guide for the dedicated route.
Deep Woods and Mines fish
Mines fish are available in all seasons and are classified by their Mines biome rather than the outdoor seasonal fish pools. Their fishing range follows the biome floors listed below.

Deep Woods fish are a distinct location and Museum set, not ordinary Pond entries.

Mines fish count toward Crown Request: Fish since v0.14.2. The Mines Guide owns the full seal requirements.
Fish Bait and Terrariums
Fish Bait was added in v0.15.0. Throw it into open water to summon fish matching the bait's rarity, or place it in the Beach Fish Trap. It targets rarity, not one guaranteed ordinary species.
- Common Fish Bait: Common, 25t.
- Uncommon Fish Bait: Uncommon, 50t.
- Rare Fish Bait: Rare, 75t.
The Terrarium recipe comes from Apiaries and Terrariums at Ruby Town Rank: Wood x25, Glass x5, Sod x5, Iron Ingot x4, Woodcrafting Level 10, and 40 minutes. Place 4 non-Bee insects of the same rarity inside, wait for the 3-day request cycle, then provide the requested item. A correctly stocked Terrarium has a 50% chance to produce Fish Bait and a 50% chance to produce Bug Pheromones. Four Common bugs produce Common-tier output, four Uncommon bugs produce Uncommon-tier output, and four Rare / valid Legendary bugs can produce Rare Fish Bait when the bait result occurs. v0.15.2 fixed requested items updating across seasons.
Fish-Bait-exclusive Fish Set
- Massive Minnow — Common Fish Bait, Common, Small.
- Copper Rockfish — Common Fish Bait, Common, Medium.
- Iron Fish — Uncommon Fish Bait, Uncommon, Small.
- Silver Squid — Uncommon Fish Bait, Uncommon, Large.
- Golden Eel — Rare Fish Bait, Rare, Giant.
These five require Fish Bait and can be summoned at Any Fishing Location.
Fish Trap
The Fish Trap unlocks after Repair the Beach Bridge and sits on the far west side of The Beach. Add one Fish Bait, then return the next day. It produces 2-4 item categories: 36% for 2, 28% for 3, and 36% for 4.
The first result is always an Ocean fish, the second is Filler, a third is 50% Fish Trap fish or 50% Pirate furniture, and a fourth is Treasure Box, Essence Stone, or Fish Trap Artifact with equal 33% category weighting. Bait tier changes available drops, not the number of categories.
Filler is either Water Chestnut x2-4 or Seaweed x2-4. The guaranteed Ocean fish must be in season, but time and weather do not matter. Fish Trap-exclusive fish ignore season and weather. Since v0.15.2, Legendary Fish cannot appear in the trap.
Fish Trap Fish Set
- Blue Crab — Common Fish Bait, Common, Small, 60t.
- Bait Thief — Common Fish Bait, Common, Medium, 100t.
- Sea Urchin — Uncommon Fish Bait, Uncommon, Small, 80t.
- Hake — Uncommon Fish Bait, Uncommon, Medium, 120t.
- Amberjack — Rare Fish Bait, Rare, Large, 200t.
Diving-only aquatic items
Not every Fish-category item is caught with a rod. These are currently listed as Diving items without a fish-shadow size:
- Clam — Ocean, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- Crayfish — River, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- Freshwater Oyster — River, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- Newt — Pond, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- Paper Pondshell — Pond, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- Pearl Clam — Ocean, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- Pond Snail — Pond, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- River Snail — River, All Seasons, Any Weather.
- Seaweed — Ocean, All Seasons, Any Weather.
Some other aquatic entries are dual rod / Diving items. Keep Rod fish, dual-source items, Diving-only items, Fish-Bait-exclusive fish, and Fish-Trap-exclusive fish as separate acquisition types.

- Weather-sensitive example: Bullfrog — Pond, Small, Common, Summer + Winter; can include Rainy / Rain / Storm / Thunderstorm / Snow / Blizzard and is also diveable.
Rods and fishing perks
Rod upgrades mainly increase maximum charged cast range; do not claim that a better rod directly increases Rare-fish spawn rate. Crafting is gated by Blacksmithing and materials, while Tackle Shop purchases are gated by Fishing level.
- Worn Fishing Rod: range 6, uncraftable, available from start, 500t.
- Copper Fishing Rod: range 8, Copper Ingot x4, Blacksmithing 4, Tackle Shop Fishing Level 8, 1,000t.
- Iron Fishing Rod: range 10, Iron Ingot x4, Blacksmithing 10, Tackle Shop Fishing Level 15, 2,000t.
- Silver Fishing Rod: range 12, Silver Ingot x4, Blacksmithing 16, Tackle Shop Fishing Level 20, 3,000t.
- Gold Fishing Rod: range 14, Gold Ingot x4, Blacksmithing 26, Tackle Shop Fishing Level 30, 4,000t.
- Mistril Fishing Rod: range 16, Mistril Ingot x4, Blacksmithing 28, Tackle Shop Fishing Level 45, 5,000t.
Fishing skill rises through Rod catches and Diving; the cap is 60.
- Tier 1 / Level 1: Weedline Watcher (15 Essence) lowers junk; Aquatic Antiquities (20) can fish Aquatic Artifacts; Appealing Reeling (10) attracts fish from farther away; Catch of the Day (15) can refund catch Stamina.
- Tier 2 / Level 15: Lucky Haul (50) can drop double fish; Perfect Catch (40) makes Uncommon and Rare fish more common; School Crasher (50) drops half a Fish School without Stamina; Unexpected Haul (40) makes Treasure Boxes more likely.
- Tier 3 / Level 30: Full Class I (75) adds one fish to schools; Legendary (80) enables Legendary Fish; Treasure Trove (70) removes Wooden Treasure Boxes and increases higher tiers; Weedline Watcher II (75) lowers junk further.
- Tier 4 / Level 45: Appealing Reeling II (155) attracts farther; Frenzy (150) can spawn a Fish School after a catch; What a Catch (145) can drop coins worth 10% of fish value; Lucky Haul II (150) increases double-fish chance.
- Tier 5 / Level 60: Abyssal Ascendence (205) can fish up an Abyssal Chest containing unique clothing set items or an Essence Stone.
For Museum completion, prioritize Appealing Reeling, Perfect Catch, Legendary, school perks, and then junk / Treasure perks. Legendary is mandatory only for actual Legendary Fish.
Museum strategy and troubleshooting
The Fish Wing reward examples are: 1 set Wooden Treasure Box + Fishing Hat; 2 Copper Treasure Box + Fishing Vest; 3 Copper Treasure Box + Fishing Shorts; 4 Copper Treasure Box + Fishing Boots; 21 Golden Treasure Box + Fin Hair Clips; 22 Golden Treasure Box + Fish Scale Cape. Later sets unlock Fishing furniture / recipes.
Use this completion route:
- Donate ordinary seasonal targets as you catch them.
- Save weather-restricted targets for their exact weather.
- Use shadow size to narrow the target.
- Use Perfect Catch and matching rarity Fish Bait.
- Complete Mines sets as biomes open and Deep Woods after it unlocks.
- Build Terrariums for Fish Bait and the Fish Bait Set.
- Repair the Beach Bridge for the Fish Trap Set.
- Unlock Legendary at Fishing Level 30 and donate each one immediately.
Fish also serve cooking, gifts, Story Quests, ordinary Requests, Crown Requests, and Museum donation. Crown Request: Fish asks you to ship 40 Fish, and since v0.14.2 eligible Mines fish count. Examples worth preserving include Terithia's Trout, Salmon plus Horseradish, and Coelacanth requests; Reina's Cod request; Hemlock's Catfish request; March's 5 Armored Bass request after Lava Caves; Archerfish for a Mines offering; and Firesail Fish for Breaking The Ruins Seal.
If the fish is not spawning, check location type, season, weather, shadow size, and rarity. If bait gives the wrong ordinary species, remember that it primarily targets rarity; the exclusive sets are the named exceptions. If a Legendary does not appear, check the Legendary perk, exact season/weather, and the pre-day message. Fish Bait works in the Mines in the current version, and the town fountain is never a fishing location.
For Water Chestnut filler and trap details, see the Water Chestnut guide. For town progression that unlocks the Beach Bridge, use the Town Repairs guide.
Tip
Read a large shadow as a size clue, not a rarity guarantee; rarity, weather, season, and location still matter.
Note
This guide keeps fish, bait, trap, and diving-only entries in separate sections because they use different acquisition rules.
